April 3, 2026, 6:06 a.m. ET

Easter is this Sunday, marking an important holiday in the Christian faith.

The holiday, which follows a 40-day period known as Lent, celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The date Easter is celebrated on changes from year to year because it is one of several “movable feasts” in the liturgical year, according to the History Channel.

The History Channel says the Christian church determined in the fourth century A.D. that Easter should be observed on the first Sunday after the first full moon occurring on or after the spring equinox. In Western Christianity, this means Easter always falls on a Sunday between March 22 and April 25.

This year, the holiday falls on April 5 and some retail and restaurant chains will be closed in observance of Easter Sunday. That will also be the case for grocery stores.
