Tottenham interest places Gakpo at centre of transfer intrigue
Liverpool could yet make another significant change to their attacking ranks before the summer transfer window closes, with Tottenham maintaining a strong interest in Cody Gakpo.

The Netherlands international has emerged as an important target for Spurs as they seek greater quality and flexibility across their forward line. Reports have suggested that Gakpo has agreed personal terms in principle with the London club, although no agreement has been reached between Tottenham and Liverpool.
That distinction is crucial. Tottenham may have established that the player is receptive to a move, but Liverpool retain control of the situation. Gakpo remains under contract at Anfield and has been an important member of the squad since joining from PSV in January 2023.
Selling an established attacker so close to the deadline would carry obvious risks. Liverpool would lose a forward who understands the demands of English football, can operate in several positions and has demonstrated an ability to contribute goals in major matches.
Tottenham’s interest is therefore only one part of a more complicated transfer equation.

Liverpool stance linked closely to Barcola pursuit
Dutch journalist Joost Blaauwhof has indicated that Liverpool’s pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola may determine whether Gakpo is allowed to leave.
“For now, radio silence between Liverpool and Spurs regarding Cody Gakpo,” Blaauwhof said. “As long as Bradley Barcola isn’t at Anfield, the chance of a deal for Tottenham seems nil. All parties know where they stand. If the Frenchman arrives, it will be up to the Oranje forward.”
His update presents Liverpool’s position as one of sensible sequencing. The club cannot afford to weaken its attacking options without first securing a replacement capable of making an immediate contribution.

Liverpool would also need to be confident that Barcola suits their tactical requirements. The France international offers speed, direct running and the ability to attack space from the left. Those qualities could give Liverpool a different dimension, but potential alone would not remove the danger attached to losing Gakpo.
Personal terms had been agreed between Gakpo and Tottenham. However, that claim should not be mistaken for confirmation of a transfer. Liverpool must still decide whether a sale serves their interests.
Barcola uncertainty leaves Tottenham waiting
Barcola’s position at PSG has become the subject of increasing speculation. Luis Enrique appeared to leave open the possibility of a departure when discussing the importance of players being fully committed to the club.

“When a player doesn’t have a smile when coming here, it’s better to look for another solution,” the PSG head coach said.
Those words inevitably attracted attention after Barcola displayed little emotion during PSG’s UEFA Super Cup celebrations. Even so, they did not amount to an explicit declaration that the winger would be sold.
Price remains another significant issue. PSG have little incentive to make negotiations straightforward, particularly when dealing with a young France international whose contract and potential provide the club with considerable leverage. Liverpool may admire Barcola, but admiration does not guarantee that they will accept an excessive valuation.
That leaves Tottenham in a waiting game. Spurs can prepare an offer and outline a role for Gakpo, but they cannot force Liverpool to sanction his departure. Unless the Anfield club secure Barcola, or identify another suitable reinforcement, there is little reason for them to weaken their squad.

One transfer could unlock the other, yet each negotiation contains its own complications. Liverpool must reach an agreement with PSG, Barcola must embrace the move and Tottenham must then satisfy the Reds’ valuation of Gakpo.
Gakpo could hold final say before deadline
Should Liverpool complete a deal for Barcola, attention would quickly return to Gakpo. At that point, the decision would become more personal.
The 27-year-old would need to assess his likely place in Liverpool’s attack against the role being offered by Tottenham. Remaining at Anfield would preserve his position within a competitive squad, but the arrival of another high-profile left-sided forward could reduce his opportunities.

Tottenham, meanwhile, could offer Gakpo a prominent place in their attacking plans. His physical strength, composure and versatility would make him an attractive Premier League option, while his experience would reduce the uncertainty normally attached to an expensive overseas signing.
Liverpool cannot allow sentiment or deadline pressure to dictate their decision. Gakpo has value because he is proven, versatile and ready to contribute. Any sale must provide enough money to improve the squad rather than merely rearrange it.
For now, Gakpo remains a Liverpool player and Tottenham remain interested observers. Barcola appears to be the piece that could transform the entire picture. If Liverpool succeed in bringing the Frenchman to Anfield, the door may finally open. Until then, Spurs can do little more than wait.
