Look friends, it’s a bit of a do-or-die time if the Colorado Rockies are looking to really miss 100 losses. They get a jumpstart on putting the brakes on a seven-game losing streak with a Monday night opener of a four-game series against the San Diego Padres.
Colorado is just five losses away from ending up with the century mark of defeats this season. While that number would disappoint Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer and his players, there are signs of growth on the team.

An infusion of young players and having catcher Hunter Goodman establish himself as the “big bat” in the team’s lineup are positives. Of course, the Rockies need to really do some work on their pitching staff, from starters to relievers.
How bad was the seven-game road trip to New York and Detroit? Colorado went 0-6 on this trip. It’s the 11th time that the Rockies have gone 0-6 or worse on a road trip. This also marks the second time that the Rockie have gone 0-6 during a homestand or road trip this season.
Getting swept by Detroit marks the 12th time that the Rockies have been swept this season.
So, how will Colorado battle against San Diego?

The Rockies’ starters are going to look at finishing up on a strong note. They are looking to fill that starter’s spot on Tuesday night. The Padres have four solid starters coming into Coors Field.
Monday, Sept. 14: RHP Tomoyuki Sugano (12-9, 5.30) vs. RHP Casey Mize (5-9, 3.70)
Sugano has been the ace for much of this season for the Rockies. His 12 wins as a starter have been the most among Colorado pitchers. Of course, having just one pitcher record double-digit wins this season isn’t much to write home about. Mize doesn’t have a great record, but his ERA is somewhat respectable.

Tuesday, Sept. 15: TBD vs. RHP Walker Buehler (8-6, 4.61)
While Colorado will name a starter before Tuesday night, Walker Buehler has been finding a bit of a new home in San Diego. I’d look for Buehler to have his best stuff on the mound against the Rockies,
Wednesday, Sept. 16: RHP Mason Adams (0-0, 3.38) vs. LHP Robbie Ray (12-8, 3.57)
Robbie Ray has come over from San Francisco and given the Padres a boost in their starting rotation. Mason Adams will do his best to thwart Ray and his teammates.
Thursday, Sept. 17: RHP Tanner Gordon (1-4, 5.55) vs. RHP Michael King (11-9, 3.03)
Tanner Gordon has a high ERA and a not-so-hot win-loss record. He’s going to have to be on his best on the mound, too, as Michael King looks to keep the Padres on a winning edge.

Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday games will all have a 6:40 p.m. MT first pitch. On Thursday, that first pitch is set for 1:10 p.m.
