When we look back on the Boston Celtics’ 2025-26 season, we’re going to remember the number of players who took developmental leaps throughout the season. From Neemias Queta becoming a genuine starting-level big man, to Baylor Scheierman proving himself as a high-level contributor off the bench. The Celtics have done a fantastic job of developing the players at their disposal.
Ron Harper Jr. is another one of Boston’s success stories. The 26-year-old forward spent most of the season playing for the Maine Celtics in the G League. However, he did earn himself some opportunities in the NBA throughout the campaign. A string of good performances, including an amazing showing against the Houston Rockets on Feb. 4, put him on the path toward a full-time NBA deal.
Ultimately, the Celtics converted Harper Jr. to a full-time contract during the final weeks of the season. While Harper Jr. doesn’t project to get much playing time during the postseason, he could find himself with a larger role next season, depending on what moves Brad Stevens and Boston’s front office make during the summer.
Those offseason moves will have a legitimate impact on Harper Jr, as the Celtics currently hold a $2.5 million team option on his deal for next season. Judging by Harper Jr’s recent interview on the team’s YouTube channel, it would appear that his hope is to remain with the franchise beyond the current season.
“I feel like this team, the culture embodies everything I want to be as a person, as a player,” Harper Jr. said. “They really invest in you, what the coaches and what the staff wants to see from you. I feel like that really aligns with what I want to see in myself. It helps create a good environment for me, where I’m being able to be pushed to be my best every single day.”
Finding cost-controlled talent isn’t an easy task in the NBA. Especially when that talent can guard multiple positions and get buckets from different areas of the floor. Harper Jr makes sense as a low-cost depth piece in Joe Mazzulla’s rotation. If he wants to stay in Boston, and the team has the roster space to make it happen, their partnership could definitely carry over into 2026-27.
Either way, Harper Jr. has become another member of Boston’s player development success story. And for a franchise that projects to be dealing with luxury tax issues in the coming years, that player development pipeline will be key to a sustainable push toward a dynasty.
